Shower grab bars should be positioned for the person’s reach, grip and movements, with secure mounting at each fixing point. An entry bar and a bar used beside a seat can serve different purposes. Stayscape installs suitable grab bars in Calgary and surrounding communities and can work from an occupational therapist’s placement recommendations.
Explain the part of showering that feels difficult.
Tell us whether the problem is crossing the shower edge, reaching the controls, turning inside or getting up from a seat. Include whether you have a tub shower or a separate shower stall. A request for “a bar in the shower” leaves several different installation possibilities.
HealthCraft’s placement guide, written by an occupational therapist, considers the person’s height, reach, grip and bathing activities. If a parent needs physical help or has changing mobility, ask an OT to recommend the support arrangement. There is no need to demonstrate a difficult movement for an installation quote.
Choose the orientation for the intended handhold.
A vertical bar offers grip positions at different heights and may suit an entrance. A horizontal bar provides a handhold along a wall. An angled bar changes height along its length and may be considered for support near a seat. None of these descriptions selects the right position for a particular person.
HealthCraft discusses orientation in relation to how someone reaches and uses their hands for support. Send an existing recommendation if you have one. We can then check whether the proposed bar, wall and fixing locations allow that arrangement. If they do not, discuss an alternative with the person who made the recommendation before drilling.
Check the entry bar with the shower door open.
Photograph the opening in the position used for entry. Show the hinges or sliding panels, the curb or tub rim, and the wall beside it. A door panel can cover a proposed fixing location when open. A narrow strip of wall may also limit the mounting plate size or bar length.
Moen’s grab-bar buying guide illustrates supports at the tub entry and along the back wall, as well as the wall framing behind them. Treat a diagram as a starting point for a layout discussion. Your enclosure dimensions and mounting conditions still need checking. Include the outside approach in the photo so we can see where the doorway handhold would sit.
Include the seat, controls and shower holder in the plan.
If you use a shower chair or bench, show its intended position and model. Include the taps and handheld-shower holder in the same view. Tell us if a recommended bar would conflict with a shelf, hose or folding seat. This lets us assess the related installation work together.
MyHealth Alberta discusses shower seating, handholds and a handheld shower as practical aids when helping someone bathe. Those fittings need to work with the equipment selected for the person. Stayscape can discuss compatible shower holders and seat installation alongside fixed bars; concealed plumbing changes require a separate scope.
Confirm the wall before committing to a bar length.
Send the make and model of any bar you already own, plus its installation instructions. The finish and overall length do not show where every mounting hole needs to land. Moen publishes separate installation sheets for its bar families, so product identification matters before choosing the fixing method.
Stayscape checks the wall surface and suitable fixing options. Tile, a fibreglass enclosure and a framed wall can need different preparation. Specialty anchors, reinforcement or repairs may be necessary. A convenient stud location should not force a bar into a position the person cannot use; unresolved mounting and placement conflicts need a revised plan.
Agree on the positions before the holes are made.
If you are arranging work for a parent, include them in the decision and have the written installation recommendation available. Confirm which shower they use and whether another household member needs the same supports. Tell us about any planned seat or enclosure change before finalising the work.
The quote conversation should identify each bar’s purpose, product and proposed wall, along with preparation still to be confirmed. If the installation visit reveals a wall condition that changes the plan, the scope needs discussing before proceeding. Stayscape provides installation work; personal reach and transfer recommendations belong with the care professional.
Know what the starting installation prices cover.
Installation of one customer-supplied grab bar starts at $179 on a suitable wall, including labour and standard fasteners. Two customer-supplied bars in the same home and visit start at $279 on suitable surfaces. Choose the number of bars from the support plan, then ask us to price that work.
Bars, specialty fixings, tile repairs and wall reinforcement are extra. Equipment, additional materials, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. We confirm the full quote before work starts. Stayscape specialises in aging-in-place installations and has helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities.
Send a wide shower photo and the support you need.
Text 587-804-9266 with your community, a photo of the whole shower with the door open, and a close view of the proposed wall. Include any seat, the bar model and relevant installation recommendation. Describe the difficulty in your own words.
You can also call to explain the job. Photos help with the first discussion, while hidden backing and the final mounting arrangement may need a visit. Keep personal records out of the photos and send only the installation details needed for the quote.
Questions about this next step
Is a vertical or horizontal shower grab bar better?
They offer different hand positions. Decide what movement needs support, then match the orientation and location to the person and bathroom. A care professional can advise on individual placement; Stayscape checks installation feasibility.
What height should a shower grab bar be installed at?
The height needs to suit the intended user, activity and applicable installation requirements. A general online measurement cannot confirm that someone can reach and use the bar. Share the OT’s recommended position if one has been provided.
How many bars should I buy?
Confirm the support locations before ordering. One bar may not address the entrance, standing area and seat equally. Send the shower layout and any equipment recommendation so the quote covers the intended arrangement.
Can you use the shower-head slide rail as a grab bar?
Only if that exact product is designed and installed for use as a grab bar. A rail made to adjust a shower head does not establish a body-support rating. Send the model if you are unsure what is already fitted.
Do you install bars supplied by the customer?
Yes, where the product and wall are suitable. Send its model and instructions first. The starting installation price includes standard fasteners; any special mounting work is priced separately.
