Grab bars can be installed in some fibreglass showers when the surround, bar and mounting method are compatible. A moulded wall may have a gap behind it, so ordinary screws through the visible panel are not a complete installation plan. The wall construction and the exact product instructions need to be checked before drilling or buying a mounting kit.
Identify the shower wall before choosing the fixings.
A smooth shower wall might be fibreglass, acrylic or another panel system. A photo helps start the conversation, but appearance alone may not identify the material, thickness or backing. Send the shower brand and model if you have them, or any installation paperwork left from the renovation.
Include moulded shelves, ledges and seams in the photos. The proposed bar ends need a suitable mounting area, and their position must work with the shower’s shape. Tell us about old holes, cracks, movement or leaks. Those conditions need assessment before a new fitting covers the area.
The gap behind a moulded surround changes the job.
Finding a wood stud behind the shower does not explain how a mounting assembly will cross any space between that stud and the shower face. The Solid Mount manufacturer describes a system that attaches to wood studs behind fibreglass and uses a mounting assembly across that space. Its instructions require measuring the distance before configuring the kit.
That is one product-specific approach, not a promise that every shower can use it. The bar’s flange, the mounting locations, the wall geometry and the shower manufacturer’s requirements still need to agree. Do not buy longer screws as a substitute for checking how the whole connection will work.
An approved anchor has specific wall requirements.
Some proprietary anchor systems list certain fibreglass wall assemblies among their permitted uses. For example, Moen’s SecureMount instructions specify surround thicknesses and space needed behind the wall. Those conditions are part of the product’s requirements, not optional details.
We need to establish whether the actual wall meets the selected system’s instructions. A kit advertised for a hollow wall is not automatically suitable for every acrylic or fibreglass enclosure. Ordinary drywall plugs, a general weight rating on a package or another homeowner’s installation do not establish compatibility for your shower.
Decide where support is needed, then check the mounting.
Tell us which movement has become difficult: stepping across the tub edge, entering the shower, standing at the controls or using a shower seat. The bar needs to be reachable for that task. If an occupational therapist has recommended a position, send the installation details rather than medical records.
Sometimes the requested location and the available mounting structure do not line up. We explain that before work proceeds. The next step may be a different suitable product or additional backing, with the location reviewed if necessary. Choosing a convenient mounting point alone does not establish that the bar will help the person use the shower.
Keep wall repairs and sealing in the quote.
A fixed bar involves openings in the shower wall. The selected system’s sealing instructions must be followed. The Solid Mount instructions, for example, include sealing around the wall opening and flange. A neat-looking cover does not tell you whether an old leak or damaged panel has been resolved.
Let us know if the opposite side of the wall is accessible from a closet or another room. This may help assess options when backing or repair work is required. It does not guarantee that opening the wall will be necessary or that an installation can be completed entirely from the shower side. Any repair, wall opening and restoration should be included in the agreed scope.
Understand when the $179 starting scope applies.
Stayscape’s one-bar starting price is $179 CAD to install one customer-supplied grab bar on a suitable wall, including labour and standard fasteners. Specialty anchors and wall reinforcement are quoted separately. A fibreglass installation that needs a proprietary mounting kit or preparation may therefore cost more than the starting scope.
Equipment, extra materials, repairs, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the price. We confirm the full quote before work begins. Stayscape specialises in aging-in-place installations and has helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities.
Send the whole shower and the intended support area.
Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community and the difficulty you want to address. Photos can help us identify what needs checking; a site visit may be needed to confirm construction before giving a firm price.
- A wide view showing the tub or shower, entry and controls.
- Close views of the proposed mounting area, including seams, shelves or damage.
- The surround brand or model and the grab-bar model, if known.
- Any existing installation recommendation and whether a previous bar was removed.
Questions about this next step
Does every fibreglass shower need the wall opened?
No. Some compatible systems install from the shower side. Other situations need backing, access or repairs. The wall and product requirements must be checked before promising either approach.
Are acrylic and fibreglass mounting instructions interchangeable?
Do not assume so. Identify the surround and use instructions that cover the actual material and wall assembly. A mounting kit approved for specified fibreglass conditions does not automatically cover an acrylic unit.
Can I buy the bar before you look at the shower?
Send the model first if possible. Bar length, flange design and mounting requirements may affect whether it suits the intended position. We can discuss the installation before you commit to a product.
Does the starting price include a fibreglass mounting kit?
The $179 one-bar scope includes installation labour and standard fasteners on a suitable wall, with a customer-supplied bar. Specialty anchors, mounting preparation, reinforcement and repairs are additional where required.
Would a suction handle avoid the mounting problem?
It avoids drilled mounting, but that does not establish that it provides the support you need. Check the exact suction product’s limits and discuss the intended use. Our suction-versus-fixed guide explains that separate decision.
