A conventional tub transfer bench often conflicts with glass shower doors because part of the seat and its legs sit outside the tub. The opening, track, tub height and room beside the bath all affect fit. An occupational therapist can help choose suitable equipment; Stayscape can discuss the physical setup and related installation work in your Calgary home.
Show the open doorway and the whole tub edge.
Shared Health Manitoba’s bathing guidance identifies sliding doors as an obstruction for a bath transfer bench. They can prevent closure and reduce the space available for someone helping with bathing. Leaving one panel partly open does not establish that the arrangement will work.
Take a wide photo with the panels in their normal open position, then a close view of the bottom track and each end of the tub. Tell us whether a panel is fixed. Include any grab bar or shower fitting beside the opening. Photos help identify questions for the equipment supplier and installer before anyone changes the enclosure.
A shower chair and a transfer bench need different space.
A chair that sits completely inside the bath still leaves the tub edge to cross. A conventional transfer bench extends across that edge. The bench therefore uses floor space that may already be occupied by the toilet, vanity or bathroom door. A product’s seat dimensions alone do not describe its full footprint.
Check the manufacturer’s overall dimensions, leg spacing and tub-clearance limits against the room. Drive Medical’s Splash Defense bench, for example, lists limits for tub height, bottom width, top width and edge width. Those specifications apply to that model. They cannot be used to approve a different bench or an unusually shaped tub.
Check the approach before deciding that the bench fits.
The room must still work with the bench in its intended position. Show the route from the bathroom door to the outside part of the seat. Include a walker or other mobility aid in the layout discussion, along with the space a helper needs. The equipment supplier or OT should confirm the arrangement for the person using it.
Measure from a stable position on the bathroom floor. There is no need for your parent to climb into the tub or demonstrate a difficult transfer for a quote. Send the existing equipment recommendation if you have one.
- Tub height and rim shape, including any track or raised edge
- The bench model, complete footprint and adjustment limits
- Floor space beside the tub and access to the toilet
- Bathroom door movement and space for the person assisting
Plan a door change and water containment together.
If glass doors obstruct the selected equipment, ask about a different enclosure arrangement. Removing panels or tracks is a separate job that needs its own assessment. The fixing points, exposed edges and wet-area finish need attention. Agree on any removal, disposal and sealing work before it starts.
A curtain also needs to work around the bench. Some benches have a purpose-made opening for the liner. Drive Medical describes that feature on its Splash Defense model so the liner can hang inside the tub. Check the actual bench’s instructions and the proposed shower arrangement; a curtain caught on a seat can leave water outside the bath. Do not cut or modify equipment to make it fit.
Include a reachable shower head and suitable support.
Share the intended seat position when discussing a handheld shower, holder or grab bar. The existing controls and hose arrangement may need attention even if the bench itself fits. Stayscape’s handheld-shower service covers compatible fitting changes and reachable holders, with concealed plumbing changes treated as a separate scope.
For someone preparing for surgery, follow the care team’s equipment plan. Alberta Health Services’ hip-replacement preparation guide lists different bathing equipment for different situations and says the healthcare team will identify the transfer-bench type. We can work from the resulting installation recommendations. Personal transfer technique and the timing of bathing after surgery belong with that team.
Get a quote for the equipment setup.
Stayscape specialises in aging-in-place installations and has helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities. Tell us whether you already own the bench, are considering a particular model, or need help with the related grab bar and shower fittings. We check the installation scope before quoting.
Bench setup, enclosure alterations, finish repairs and shower fittings are quoted for the actual bathroom. The $179 starting price applies only to installation of one customer-supplied grab bar on a suitable wall, including labour and standard fasteners. Specialty anchors, tile repairs and wall reinforcement are extra. Equipment, other materials, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. We confirm the full quote before work begins.
Send the tub, door and bench details by text.
Text 587-804-9266 with your community, a wide bathroom photo, the open tub doors and the bench model if selected. Describe the problem in everyday terms, such as the seat hitting the door track or the bench blocking the toilet. Keep personal paperwork out of photos.
If you are arranging this for a parent, include them in the equipment and layout decision. Tell us about an expected return-home date so we can discuss the work and availability. Photos start the quote; some compatibility and mounting checks need a visit.
Questions about this next step
Can I leave the glass doors partly open around the bench?
Do not assume that provides a usable setup. The panel, opening and bottom track can obstruct the bench or the person, and water still needs to stay inside the tub. Check the complete layout with the equipment supplier or OT before use.
Will a folding or sliding bench solve a small-bathroom problem?
Those features do not guarantee fit. Check the bench in its full operating position, its locking requirements and the space used during access. A folded storage dimension does not show how much room is needed while bathing.
Do the shower doors always have to come off?
The answer depends on the enclosure and prescribed equipment. A conventional bench spanning the edge commonly conflicts with sliding doors. Confirm the layout first; door removal is a separate scope, not an automatic part of bench setup.
Can you install grab bars and a handheld shower at the same visit?
Mention both when requesting the quote. We can assess the combined installation, product compatibility and wall preparation, then confirm scope and availability.
Should I buy a bench before contacting Stayscape?
You can start with bathroom photos and a recommended model. Confirm personal suitability with the care professional and room compatibility before buying. This can avoid choosing equipment that blocks the door or toilet.
