Ramps and entryways

Keeping a wheelchair ramp usable through a Calgary winter.

If the ramp is clear but the landing or driveway is icy, the trip outside is still difficult. Plan the whole route before choosing a surface treatment or another entrance.

The starting point

An outdoor wheelchair ramp needs a clear surface, usable landings and ongoing winter care. Follow the ramp manufacturer’s instructions for tools and ice melt, and arrange who will check the route before it is used. Persistent pooling, movement or a difficult doorway needs an installation assessment. Stayscape can discuss ramp and entry changes in Calgary and surrounding communities.

Check the route before someone relies on it.

Look from a safe position at the doorway, upper landing, ramp, lower landing and the path to the vehicle or sidewalk. If snow or ice makes the route unsafe, arrange another suitable access plan instead of trying it with the wheelchair. A household member may need help from the person’s care team or transport provider to plan that trip.

For a parent living alone, agree who checks and clears the route and how the parent will know it is ready. A new ramp still needs that arrangement. If nobody can maintain an exposed route, include that limitation when discussing the installation.

Match snow tools and ice melt to the actual ramp.

Find the brand, model and care instructions before buying a treatment. American Access’s winter-care sheet advises clearing accumulated snow and sweeping its aluminum modular ramps. It permits calcium chloride or magnesium chloride salt substitutes for those systems. That guidance should not be treated as approval for every ramp, finish or ice-melt mixture.

EZ-ACCESS recommends plastic shovels and brooms for its aluminum ramps and warns against metal tools, rock salt and hot water. Read the ramp instructions alongside the treatment label, including temperature limits and application directions. If the product combination is unclear, check with the manufacturer before applying it. Keep the care instructions with the household’s winter supplies.

Recurring ice needs a closer look at water.

Calgary’s City guidance describes daytime melt refreezing overnight. For a home entrance, note where the water comes from and where it collects. A ramp that looks clear during a warm afternoon may need another check before an evening trip.

Photograph the water path when it is visible from a safe place. Persistent pooling may involve the ramp layout, drainage or surrounding property, so the solution and responsible trade need to be established before work is quoted.

  • Water arriving from a roof edge or downspout near the entrance
  • Snow stored beside the route that drains across it as it melts
  • A puddle at the lower landing or driveway connection
  • Debris blocking openings or drainage paths
  • A dip, shifted support or change in level that needs inspection

Check surface additions before buying mats or grip tape.

A proposed mat, coating or traction strip needs to suit the ramp surface and the mobility device. Ask the ramp manufacturer whether the addition is permitted and how it should be attached and maintained. Include its thickness when checking the connection to the doorway and landings.

Send the proposed product with photos of the ramp instead of asking only whether it is labelled non-slip. The quote needs to account for attachment, edges, drainage and any existing surface damage. An added layer cannot correct an unstable support or make a poorly planned route fit the available space.

Would entering through the garage help?

A garage route may reduce some weather exposure, but it needs its own layout check. Measure the rise from the garage floor to the house entrance and show the space available for a ramp and landings. Include the door swing, parked vehicle, stored items and the route from outside the garage.

The person needs room to approach the door and use it with their mobility device. An occupational therapist can advise on their access needs; the installation also has to meet the product and applicable building requirements. Do not shorten a ramp to squeeze it between the car and the house door. Stayscape can review the available space and explain what needs an on-site assessment.

What Stayscape can quote for the entrance.

We specialise in aging-in-place installations, including ramps, threshold transitions, entry handrails and suitable lighting. An enquiry about winter access can lead to a quote for the physical changes the home needs. Routine snow clearing, ice treatment and drainage repairs are separate from our published installation scopes and need their own arrangements.

There is no single starting price for a full exterior or garage ramp system. Equipment, rise, layout, landings, attachment and any associated repairs affect the scope. Our $149 CAD starting price applies only to fitting and checking one suitable customer-supplied threshold ramp. Ramp supply, custom construction and doorway changes are extra; it is not the price of a multi-step wheelchair ramp. Extra materials, repairs, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. We confirm the full quote before work starts.

Send the entrance, the ramp and the trouble spot.

Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community, the mobility device used and what makes the route difficult. Include the ramp brand if known, photos of both landings and a view of the doorway. For recurring ice, describe when it appears and where water collects. Take photos from a safe position without asking anyone to use an icy ramp.

Stayscape has helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities. We can discuss a Calgary home or confirm travel and installation scope for a nearby community. If you are arranging the work for a parent, include their preferences and any care-team recommendations before choosing an entrance.

Questions about this next step

Are aluminum wheelchair ramps safe in winter?

Snow and ice can make an outdoor ramp slippery, including aluminum systems. Suitability depends on the product, layout, condition, weather and ongoing care. Keep the whole route usable and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

What ice melt can I put on an aluminum ramp?

Use the instructions for the specific ramp and check the ice-melt label. American Access and EZ-ACCESS publish product-specific winter guidance. Do not assume ordinary rock salt or a pet-friendly label confirms compatibility with your ramp.

Does a mesh ramp mean nobody has to clear snow?

Plan for clearing and checking the route even with an open surface. American Access warns that snow and ice can make any ramp slippery. The landings and onward path also need attention before use.

Can Stayscape make a ramp ice-proof?

No installation can promise an ice-proof route. We can discuss physical access changes and identify installation questions to assess. Winter checking, clearing and treatment still need an ongoing plan.

Can the $149 threshold ramp price cover my garage entrance?

Only if the job is fitting and checking one suitable customer-supplied threshold ramp within that scope. A higher rise, multiple steps, a full ramp system, custom work or doorway changes needs a separate quote.
