SEEING THE STAIRS

When the stair edges blend together.

The light may be on and the steps may still be hard to distinguish. Tell us whether the difficulty is spotting the first step, seeing each edge on the way down or finding the landing.

The starting point

Review the stair lighting, shadows and contrast between each edge and the surrounding tread. Suitable contrast markings and better-positioned lighting may help make edges clearer. Stayscape can discuss practical changes and compatible plug-in or battery-light setup in Calgary and nearby communities. New wiring, stair repairs and personal vision needs require their own assessment.

Describe where the view becomes difficult.

Start with what the person has already noticed. Does a dark shadow cross one step? Do patterned carpet or similar colours make several treads look like one surface? Does a window or bare bulb produce glare? Include the landing at each end and any turn in the staircase.

Alberta’s Take Action fall-prevention booklet explains that glare and changes in depth perception can affect how stairs are seen. It recommends contrasting strips at step edges. If sight has changed or the stairs have become difficult to use, involve the person’s vision-care professional or occupational therapist alongside the installation discussion. Nobody needs to demonstrate an unsafe descent for a quote.

Contrast needs to make the real edge easier to identify.

A contrasting edge differs visibly from the tread around it. The useful colour depends on the existing stair finish, so a product described as high visibility is not a complete selection rule. Send a photo of the actual staircase before ordering a roll of marking tape.

CMHC’s building-circulation guide recommends contrasting stair nosings and slip-resistant edges. It also warns that loose or protruding strips can create a tripping hazard. The proposed treatment needs a secure, suitable attachment and a consistent layout. We can review the physical fitting; any placement instructions from a vision rehabilitation professional should be part of that review.

Check the stair surface before choosing tape or trim.

Painted timber, tile and carpet need different products and preparation. A strip intended for a hard surface should not be assumed suitable for a carpeted tread. Tell us about peeling finish, loose carpet, worn nosings or earlier repairs, and send the proposed product’s installation instructions.

A strip cannot repair a moving or broken step. MyHealth Alberta’s home checklist calls for loose, broken or uneven steps to be fixed and carpet to be firmly attached. Identify that work before covering the area. Stair repairs, carpet work or replacement nosings may need a separate contractor scope before small visibility changes can be fitted.

Look at where the light lands, not only how bright the fixture is.

From a safe landing, note whether the light reaches the tread surfaces and the next landing. A fixture can be bright while a wall or turn blocks the lower steps. Show the fixture positions and describe the time of day when the problem occurs; a photograph alone may not reproduce the glare the person experiences.

CMHC advises positioning lighting to avoid reflections on stairs and landings. We would also want to know which lights are available before someone approaches from either direction. A stairwell requiring permanent lighting or switches at both ends needs an electrical scope. Plug-in or battery lights should be considered within the full arrangement, not assumed to provide all the lighting a staircase needs.

Check controls, mounting and maintenance before fitting small lights.

Send the light model and explain whether it is switched manually, responds to darkness or activates with movement. With a motion product, its sensing area and shut-off behaviour need to suit the approaches and pauses on this particular route. Check the product instructions rather than relying on a general motion-light label.

Do not open fittings or remove electrical covers for photos. Tell us if new wiring, a replacement wired fixture or a relocated switch is needed so it can be scoped with the appropriate qualified trade.

  • A mounting position that leaves the handrail grip and walking space clear
  • An available outlet without a lead crossing the steps or landing
  • Access for battery changes or charging without reaching over the stairs
  • The product’s permitted indoor or outdoor location
  • A practical way for the household to check that the lights still work

Keep visibility and handrail work in the same conversation.

If someone also struggles to hold the rail, mention that in the enquiry. A new light does not change the grip or mounting of an existing handrail. Stayscape can discuss a suitable second rail, a different grip or assessment of loose fixings alongside the visibility work.

We specialise in aging-in-place installations and have helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities. Share any care-team recommendations before choosing the work. If the person cannot manage the stairs, their care professional can help plan access while installation options are assessed.

Quote lighting, edge treatment and repairs as separate items.

Stayscape’s $99 CAD starting scope is fitting up to three customer-supplied plug-in or battery lights in one visit, with no new wiring. It is not a complete stair-lighting package or a promise that three lights will suit the staircase. Contrast-strip fitting, surface preparation and repairs need a quote for the actual job.

A straight wall-mounted handrail starts from $249 CAD in labour on suitable backing; the rail and brackets are extra. Turns, long runs, exterior work and repairs are quoted separately. Equipment, extra materials, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. We confirm the full scope and price before work starts.

Text the staircase and explain what is hard to see.

Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community, the number of steps and photos from safe positions at the landings. Include the existing lights, handrails and any product you are considering. Say whether the concern is indoors, in the garage or outside so exposure and installation conditions can be checked.

An adult child can start the enquiry for a parent. Keep the person living there involved in the proposed colours, controls and layout. We can explain which fitting details need an on-site check and what work should be quoted separately.

Questions about this next step

What colour should a stair-edge strip be?

Choose a treatment that visibly contrasts with the actual tread finish and suits the installation surface. A colour that stands out on dark timber may be less distinct on a light floor. Include any vision professional’s placement recommendation.

Can ordinary tape be put over carpeted stairs?

Do not assume a hard-surface tape will attach properly to carpet. The surface, attachment and edge profile need checking. Loose carpet or damaged steps need repair assessment first.

Are brighter bulbs enough to make stairs easier to see?

They may not address glare, shadows, a hidden landing or edges that blend together. Review light placement and the staircase as well as the fixtures. Electrical changes need the appropriate qualified trade.

Does the $99 starting price include all the stair lighting?

It covers fitting up to three suitable customer-supplied plug-in or battery lights in one visit, without new wiring. The full staircase may need a different arrangement. Other equipment and work are quoted separately.

Can you review a garage step that is hard to see?

Yes. Send the whole approach, step edges, lights and nearby door. We can discuss practical installation options after reviewing the layout. A handrail, ramp, lighting change and stair repair are separate scopes.
