MOVING BETWEEN ROOMS

Your walker catches where the carpet meets the hard floor.

If the wheels stop at the same join between rooms, show us that edge from both sides. A loose carpet edge, a raised metal strip and a change in floor height need different work.

The starting point

The fix may involve repairing the carpet edge, replacing an unsuitable transition strip or fitting a suitable small ramp. First check whether the flooring is sound and what the wheels catch on. Stayscape reviews small access changes in Calgary and surrounding communities; damaged flooring or whole-room levelling needs a separate scope.

Identify the edge that interrupts the route.

Describe what you have already noticed: the front wheels stop against the higher floor, the metal strip moves, or the carpet has pulled away. Tell us whether this happens going into the room, coming out, or both. Do not repeatedly push through an awkward crossing to test it for a quote.

MyHealth Alberta lists thresholds and buckled carpet among home trip hazards. Its guidance also calls for clear, well-lit routes. Take the photos from a stable position with the area visible. If the person cannot manage the route, ask their care professional about an interim arrangement while the physical problem is reviewed.

Separate a damaged edge from a sound height change.

A carpet that has pulled back, exposed sharp fixings, a bent strip or a moving tile needs repair assessment. Covering it with another piece may leave the damaged area underneath. Tell us about dampness, movement or earlier repairs before asking for a ramp fitting.

A sound join between different finished levels raises a different question: how to make that change in height usable along the actual route. We can discuss the small fitting work and identify preparation that needs a flooring specialist. The quote should distinguish these jobs so a transition product is not ordered before its supporting surface is ready.

Check whether the transition is for new flooring or an existing floor.

Some transition profiles are installed while the tile is being laid. Schluter’s RENO-TK has an anchoring leg set beneath the tile and a channel that protects the adjoining carpet edge. That construction is relevant when planning new tile; it is not a promise of a simple replacement at a finished doorway.

Schluter distinguishes its RENO-RAMP profile for new construction from RENO-RAMP-K for certain retrofit applications beside existing flooring. A retrofit label still needs checking against the actual surfaces and manufacturer instructions. Send the product details and views of the adjoining surfaces before ordering a replacement.

A reducer strip and a small access ramp have different dimensions.

A reducer is a transition between a higher and lower floor finish. Some products make that change over a short distance; a separate access ramp may extend farther into the lower room. Compare the rise, the sloped run and the edges with the available space before choosing a product.

Show the route from both directions, including any nearby turn. A piece that reaches across the opening can still leave an awkward edge at its ends or occupy space needed to approach the door. The exact product instructions and the person’s equipment need to be considered together. A care professional can advise on suitability for the person using the walker or wheelchair.

Gather a few measurements without taking the floor apart.

Send a wide view showing both rooms and a close view beside a tape measure. Measure only from a position you can reach comfortably. Keep the existing trim in place for the initial enquiry; its attachment and the flooring underneath may need an on-site check.

Tell us if there is underfloor heating or if you know the floor is a floating system. The fixing method needs to suit the flooring and the transition product. Do not assume that screws or adhesive can be added anywhere a strip appears to fit.

  • Height difference between the finished surfaces
  • Width of the join and clear route through the opening
  • Space available on the lower side for a sloped transition
  • Floor material on each side and any known movement
  • Nearby door shown open and closed, plus the mobility-aid model

Price the repair and the fitting separately.

Fitting and checking one suitable customer-supplied threshold ramp starts from $149. A carpet-to-tile or carpet-to-vinyl join may qualify only if the proposed work fits that scope. A custom transition, multiple joins, carpet work, tile removal or floor levelling needs a separate quote.

Ramp supply, extra materials, repairs, doorway changes, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. Send a product link before purchasing if you have already found a ramp or strip. We confirm the work and full price before starting. Tell us about any rental or condominium arrangements that affect alterations to the floor.

Text the join that keeps getting in the way.

Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community, photos from each side and a short description of what catches. Include the walker or wheelchair model and any recommended access changes. One clearly identified transition is enough to start the conversation.

Stayscape specialises in aging-in-place installations and has helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities. We can discuss practical fitting at the raised edge and explain when flooring preparation needs to happen first. For a door that would hit the proposed ramp, send the door-clearance details as well.

Questions about this next step

Will replacing the metal strip solve the problem?

It depends on what is wrong. A bent or loose strip may need replacement, but a height difference, damaged carpet edge or unsupported flooring also needs review. Send both sides of the join.

Can a ramp be placed over loose carpet?

The underlying carpet and supporting surface need assessment first. The ramp must be installed on surfaces allowed by its manufacturer. Covering a moving or damaged edge does not repair it.

Does every tile transition fit after the floor is installed?

No. Some profiles have an anchoring leg installed beneath the tile. A finished floor may need a different retrofit product or flooring work before a transition can be fitted.

Do I need to replace all the flooring?

A local repair or suitable transition may be possible. The condition and height difference need checking first. Whole-room levelling or structural floor repair is outside the small ramp-fitting scope.

Can you quote more than one floor transition?

Yes. Send separate photos and measurements for each join and identify the rooms. Different floor materials and height changes can require different products and preparation; the $149 starting scope covers one suitable customer-supplied ramp.
