WALKERS & DOORWAY ACCESS

Your walker won’t fit through the bathroom door.

Before buying a narrower walker or ordering a new door, find out what is taking up the opening. The door itself, the frame, a floor lip or the turn from the hallway can each need a different solution.

The starting point

Measure the usable opening with the door open and compare it with the walker in its normal operating position. Also check the approach and space inside the bathroom. Compatible swing-clear hinges may recover space occupied by the door, but they cannot enlarge the frame. Stayscape can discuss suitable door hardware and access changes in Calgary and nearby communities.

Describe where the walker catches.

A wheel hitting the frame, a brake cable catching the handle and a walker stopping at a floor transition are different problems. Tell us what touches what. Do not fold the walker or alter its setup while relying on it for support to squeeze through. An occupational therapist or mobility professional can advise on the person's equipment and movement needs.

If the doorway cannot currently be used safely, arrange an appropriate temporary plan with the person's care team. The installation quote can address the physical obstruction once the access needs are clear.

Measure the opening you can actually use.

Open the door as far as it normally opens without forcing it. Measure the narrowest usable gap between the open door and the opposite frame or stop. Include a photo showing where the tape was placed. The width of the door slab alone does not describe the space available to pass through.

If measuring is difficult, send photos and ask about a site check. Useful clearance depends on the person, the equipment and the route. There is no single walker width that makes every bathroom doorway suitable.

  • The walker make and model, plus its widest outside dimension in use
  • The clear doorway opening with the door open
  • Anything that prevents the door from opening farther
  • The hallway approach and space just inside the bathroom

When offset or swing-clear hinges may help.

These hinges move the open door out of more of the passage space. They may help when the door's thickness is the obstruction and the frame opening is otherwise adequate. CMHC describes offset hinges as one option for making better use of an existing doorway.

The hinge must suit the door and frame. There must also be room beside the opening for the shifted door and handle. Allegion's hardware guidance notes that restricted space behind a door can limit the benefit. Send hinge photos and a view of the adjacent wall before buying a product; no fixed clearance gain is promised.

Check the turn, handle and floor together.

A walker that fits straight through an opening may still be difficult to turn from a narrow hallway. The person also needs to operate the door and use the room. Photograph the approach, door swing and the route toward the toilet or shower without placing anyone in an awkward position.

A compatible lever handle can address a grip problem. A suitable floor-transition product can address some height changes. Those products solve different parts of the task, so the quote should identify each one. CMHC's accessibility guidance considers manoeuvring space and door hardware alongside opening width.

When the doorway needs a larger change.

If the frame opening or surrounding layout is the limiting factor, hardware alone may not provide the needed space. A wider opening or a different door arrangement needs a separate assessment. Structure, services in the wall and the finishing work can affect the scope. In a rental, condo or shared building, confirm the necessary owner and building approvals before permanent work.

Ask for the proposed opening, hardware, wall or trim work and restoration to be explained in the quote. A handle-replacement price does not include doorway widening.

Send a useful first text to Stayscape.

Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community, the walker model and a short description of where it catches. Send the door open, the hinge side, the hallway approach and any floor lip. If an occupational therapist has made an installation recommendation, include those details. Personal health records are not needed for an initial installation enquiry.

We review the practical work, explain what needs checking in the home and confirm the scope before starting. Our $129 starting labour scope covers replacing up to two compatible customer-supplied interior handles in one visit. It does not price swing-clear hinges, door repairs or a wider opening. Those changes need their own quote, with materials, travel outside Calgary and GST addressed.

Questions about this next step

Can offset hinges make any bathroom door wide enough for a walker?

No. They may recover space taken up by the open door, but the frame remains the same width. Door compatibility, adjacent-wall clearance and the person's approach all need checking.

Should I buy a narrower walker to fit the bathroom?

Choose mobility equipment with a qualified professional based on the person who uses it. A product that fits the doorway may still be unsuitable for their support needs. Review the doorway and equipment together.

Does removing the bathroom door solve the problem?

Removing a door changes privacy and may leave other access problems. It also may be inappropriate for the type of opening or building. Discuss the complete layout before agreeing to a change.

Can my family arrange the installation while I stay involved?

Yes. You and the family member can discuss the work with Stayscape, decide who approves the quote and arrange access. Tell us which doorway you want reviewed and the community where the home is.
