Easier everyday access

The door is too heavy, or closes before you get through.

Turning the handle may be easy while pushing the door is exhausting. Tell us which part of the trip is difficult so the proposed work addresses it.

The starting point

A door that is hard to open needs its hinges, latch, seals, closer and surrounding clearance checked. Opening effort and closing speed are separate issues. A compatible hardware adjustment or replacement may help, but required closing, latching and security functions must be preserved. Stayscape can discuss practical doorway changes for Calgary homeowners and families.

Start with the part that makes you stop.

Describe what already happens during everyday use. Does the handle resist turning, does the door stick as it leaves the frame, or is it difficult to push through the whole swing? Does it come back toward you before the walker or wheelchair has cleared it? You do not need to repeat a difficult trip for a video.

Photos of both sides, the top hardware and the surrounding floor space help separate a handle issue from a door-operation problem. Keep the door in a safe position for photos and leave the hardware assembled.

  • Which door it is: bedroom, bathroom, outside entrance or garage-to-house door
  • Whether entering, leaving or both directions are difficult
  • Whether the problem is new or has been there for a while
  • Any rubbing, scraping, slamming or failure to latch that you have noticed
  • The mobility device used and whether another person usually helps

Check the door before changing the closer.

Allegion's door-closer guidance advises checking alignment, sagging and other restrictions on movement before adjusting a closer. The fitting may be working against a problem elsewhere in the doorway. A replacement handle or slower closing setting would not resolve that cause.

The quote may need to include hinge or latch work, compatible hardware, or repair of the door or frame. Tell us if weatherstripping or the door was recently changed. Keep exterior seals in place while the cause is assessed; removing them to make the door feel lighter can affect the entrance's intended protection.

Opening force and closing speed need separate checks.

A closer controls how a door returns toward its frame. Allegion's LCN and Falcon guidance distinguishes spring power from the valves that control closing speed. Reducing a speed setting does not necessarily reduce the effort needed to open the door. The correct adjustment depends on the actual closer and installation.

Some hardware offers delayed closing, but that feature and its operating range vary by model. Avoid turning unidentified screws or removing an arm to experiment. Ask for the model to be checked against its instructions and for the complete opening and closing cycle to be assessed after any work.

Allow room to use the handle and move past the door.

A door can be manageable by hand yet difficult to use from a walker or wheelchair. Show where the person approaches, where the door swings and what space remains beside the handle. Include the landing, threshold, nearby furniture and any second door in the route.

Accessibility Standards Canada's built-environment model standard treats opening force, closing action and manoeuvring space as separate design considerations. It is useful context, not a blanket rule for every existing Calgary home. The proposed work needs to suit the person, the property and its applicable requirements. An occupational therapist can advise on the person's reach and mobility needs.

Keep garage and shared-building door requirements in the plan.

Tell us if the door connects the house to a garage, opens from a suite into a shared corridor, or is part of an exit or fire separation. These locations can have closing and latching requirements that affect the options. Have the requirements for the actual door checked before changing its hardware.

Do not disconnect a closer or prop a required self-closing door open as a permanent accessibility fix. In a condo or rental, involve the owner or building manager before changes are approved. Alberta's building-code information is linked below so the appropriate professional can check the applicable requirements. A product sold as accessible does not by itself confirm a compliant installation.

When a different access arrangement needs assessment.

If appropriate manual-door work cannot make the entrance usable for the person, ask about the next assessment before purchasing more hardware. A powered door operator involves a separate equipment, power, control and safety scope. It should not be assumed to be included in an ordinary handle-replacement visit.

Changing to a garage entrance also requires checking its steps, landing and threshold. A lighter door alone may leave those barriers in place. Stayscape can discuss the physical access work within our installation scope and explain which parts need a specialist or another trade. Share care-team recommendations if this is being planned before a return home.

Price the door work separately from a handle change.

Stayscape's $129 CAD starting scope is labour to replace up to two compatible interior handles in one visit using customer-supplied handles. That price does not include closer replacement, door repairs, new holes, locks or exterior hardware. A heavy or fast-closing door needs a quote for the work identified after review.

Equipment, extra materials, repairs, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. We confirm the full scope and price before starting. If several doors are difficult, send a separate photo and short description for each so the quote can distinguish compatible handle changes from other work.

Text the doorway and describe the difficult movement.

Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community, photos of the door from both sides and the hardware at the top. Include the closer's visible brand or model if you can read it safely. Say whether the concern is pushing, pulling, turning the handle or having enough time and space to pass.

Stayscape specialises in aging-in-place installations and has helped hundreds of people across Calgary and surrounding communities. An adult child can start the enquiry for a parent. Keep the person using the door involved in the proposed change and confirm who can approve the work and arrange access.

Questions about this next step

Will a lever handle make a heavy door easier to open?

A suitable lever can address a grip or turning problem. It does not necessarily reduce resistance from the door, frame or closer. Describe both handle operation and the effort needed to move the door.

Can the door be slowed down for a walker?

That depends on the hardware, its condition and the doorway's requirements. Closing speed, opening effort and space to pass all need review. Any adjustment must preserve the necessary closing and latching operation.

Can I remove the closer on the garage-to-house door?

Have the requirements for that door checked before altering it. Do not disconnect a required self-closing device to make access easier. Discuss a suitable hardware or access solution that retains the required function.

Do you install automatic door openers for $129?

No. The $129 starting scope covers labour for up to two compatible interior handle replacements with customer-supplied handles. A powered operator is a separate specialist equipment and installation project.

Can you review a condo entrance door?

Send the photos and describe the difficulty. Identify whether it is a suite or common-area door and involve the building manager or owner. Approval and the applicable door requirements must be checked before changes.
