RENTAL HOME INSTALLATIONS

Can you get grab bars installed in a rental home?

You can ask for fixed bathroom supports in a rental. Start with the support you need, then agree on the work with the landlord or property manager before arranging installation.

The starting point

Grab bars may be possible in a rented house, apartment or condo. The proposed location, wall construction and property approval need checking. Where the request relates to a disability, Alberta’s human rights accommodation process may apply. Stayscape can provide an installation quote for Calgary and surrounding communities while you work through that process.

Describe the support your parent needs.

Explain which bathroom task is difficult and where a handhold has been recommended. An occupational therapist’s installation recommendation can help identify the intended bar locations and equipment. If you are helping a parent, include them in the discussion and confirm who will handle the quote and property arrangements.

The Alberta Human Rights Commission advises people requesting accommodation to explain their need and provide enough information for the housing provider to understand it. The Commission also describes a shared responsibility to participate in the process. Send Stayscape the relevant installation details; keep medical records and unrelated tenancy paperwork out of quote photos.

Ask the landlord about the specific fixed changes.

A useful request identifies the proposed bathroom and the type of support, then asks how the property manager wants to review the installation. Include the care professional’s recommended locations if available. Ask whether the building has wall-construction information or a process for contractor access.

Keep the agreed scope in writing. Ask for clarification if an approval only says “bathroom changes” without identifying the proposed work. A quote can be prepared for review before an installation date is confirmed.

  • Which bars and mounting locations are being considered
  • Who can authorise changes to the unit
  • What quote or installation details the manager needs
  • Who will arrange access and be present for the work
  • How payment and any future removal will be addressed

Disability-related requests have an Alberta process.

The Alberta Human Rights Commission states that landlords and housing providers must accommodate needs related to protected grounds, including disability, to the point of undue hardship. That requires consideration of the person’s circumstances. It does not mean an installer can decide which modification must be approved.

If a request is refused or the proposed alternative does not meet the person’s needs, consult the Commission’s housing guidance or a qualified legal adviser. Stayscape’s role is to describe and assess the installation work. This page is general planning information, not advice on the outcome of a particular tenancy dispute.

A rented condo may involve more than one decision-maker.

For a rented condominium, ask the owner or manager whether the proposed work needs review under the building’s alteration process. The Alberta Human Rights Commission explains that both a condo-unit landlord and the condominium corporation can have accommodation duties, depending on what the request concerns.

For the installation quote, tell us about any access requirements, permitted work times or documentation the building has requested. A hallway or shared entrance is a different work area from a bathroom inside the unit. Identify the actual location so the correct person can review the scope.

Check the wall and product before buying the bars.

Permission to install does not establish that a chosen bar can mount at the requested position. Send a wide bathroom photo, the proposed wall and the model of any bar already purchased. Tile, fibreglass and other surfaces need their own mounting assessment. Hidden backing may need an on-site check.

Stayscape can discuss suitable fixed grab-bar installation and any preparation needed. Specialty fixings, reinforcement, tile repairs or moving the proposed location can change the quote. If a mounting problem affects an OT’s recommended position, resolve the revised plan before drilling. An ordinary towel rail should not be used as the intended support.

Settle the payment arrangement before authorising work.

Ask who will approve the quote and pay the installer. Keep that arrangement separate from assumptions about grants or reimbursement. A Stayscape quote describes the work and price; it does not decide the landlord’s or tenant’s legal responsibility for the cost.

Installation of one customer-supplied grab bar starts at $179 on a suitable wall, including labour and standard fasteners. Two customer-supplied bars at the same home in one visit start at $279 on suitable surfaces. Bars, specialty fixings, reinforcement and repairs are extra. Additional materials, travel outside Calgary and GST may add to the total. We confirm the full quote before work begins.

Check funding requirements before starting the job.

Alberta’s Residential Access Modification Program, or RAMP, has applicant and project requirements. Its application information lists a Landlord Property Modification Agreement for applicants in rental properties, co-ops, colonies or a family member’s home. Being a renter or needing a grab bar does not by itself establish eligibility.

Check the current program forms and approval requirements directly with RAMP before committing to work. Ask what cost and installation details the application needs. The existing Stayscape funding guide links to the main Alberta programs; no funding approval or reimbursement is promised.

Text the proposed work and where the approval stands.

Call or text 587-804-9266 with your community, the bathroom photos and the support being considered. Say whether the landlord has agreed to the installation, wants a quote first or has requested more detail. Include the bar model and any relevant placement recommendation.

Questions about this next step

Can I ask for a quote before my landlord approves the work?

Yes. Send the proposed installation and photos, and tell us what the landlord needs to review. A quote does not authorise drilling or guarantee that the proposed mounting will be suitable.

Does the landlord always have to pay for grab bars?

The payment responsibility can depend on the circumstances and applicable duties. Agree who will authorise and pay for the installation, and seek qualified advice if responsibility is disputed. Stayscape can quote the physical work.

Can I use suction bars while waiting for approval?

A removable product is not automatically a suitable substitute for the recommended support. Check the exact product limitations and ask the care professional about an interim arrangement. The suction-versus-fixed guide explains that equipment question separately.

Will the bars have to come out when I move?

Discuss that with the landlord as part of the arrangement and keep the agreement. Future removal and wet-area repairs need their own assessment and price; do not assume they are included in installation.

Can you install bars recommended by an OT?

Yes, subject to the property arrangements and a suitable mounting method. Send the installation recommendations so the proposed product, location and wall can be checked together.
